“The Hotel Convencion in Madrid is conveniently located in the Salamanca area with good access to the Metro and shopping areas.
The other customers at this hotel are largely from tours, and tour buses clog the roadway at all hours. The lobby is often very crowded and the courtyard fairly noisy.
The decor is decidedly shabby, and there's a very strong smell of cigarettes in many areas, especially the lobby and in some of the rooms, including the one I had. I was not asked whether I wanted a smoking or a non-smoking room. The effect of the decor and the smell was decidedly depressing.
Watch out for unethical billing practices -- I paid cash for the extremely expensive non WIFI internet access, and then was charged yet again on check out. I was told that I had to show my receipt for the cash payment before they could remove the charge from my bill.
During this encounter the desk clerk accused me of being rude. Spanish customer service is never all that good, but this man was in great need of Customer Service 101.
So if you enjoy being treated with respect and you enjoy pleasant surroundings, you might want to look elsewhere for a hotel.
Phone calls from the room are also expensive, and you are charged for making a call even if there is no connection.
All in all, it was fairly below average. ”
